Chemical analysis of new and “aged” e-liquids: Development of a rapid toxicological screening approach

Project description

This study investigated the chemical composition of electronic cigarette liquids (e-liquids) purchased from Australian suppliers. We used a cutting-edge laboratory technique to assess e-liquids for levels of a wide range of potentially harmful chemicals, including nicotine, flavourings, known toxins and polycyclic-aromatic hydrocarbons (known to cause cancer). Our results showed that all e-liquids contained chemicals which have not yet been tested for inhalation toxicity (many are food ingredients). We also found that the majority of e-liquids contained chemicals that were known toxins, including airway irritants and carcinogens.
