An investigation of parental mental health among the Aboriginal population in Western Australia, and its impact on children’s outcomes

Investigators: Carrington Shepherd, Fiona Stanley, Nick De Klerk, Roz Walker

This project aims to address some important gaps in the evidence base in the area of Aboriginal mental health, with a focus on the "critical 1001 day" period for children. We are examining the type, scale and timing of mental health problems in Aboriginal children and their parents, and how these have changed over time. Key outcomes will include improved knowledge of the mental and physical health of Aboriginal children in Western Australia, pregnancy outcomes, child abuse and neglect, disability, contact with the juvenile justice system and education.
