Veterans who transition out of the military often face substantive challenges during their move to civilian life, including the management of their health, identifying opportunities for employment, contributing to the financial and emotional functioning of their household, and developing high-quality social connections. Developed by research leaders at the University of British Columbia, Purpose After Service through Sport (PASS) was a program designed to complement existing veterans’ services with a view to support veteran well-being and transition into civilian life.

PASS uses sport as a means of fostering a sense of social connectivity, promoting physical and mental health, and enabling veterans and currently serving military to learn about and access important support services (e.g., counselling, employment, education, transition supports).

By extending PASS to Australia, the proposed doctoral research project draws from scientific evidence related to the mental health benefits of regular physical activity, and the benefits of group-based programs that foster social connectivity.
