Does commencement of a gluten- free diet improve blood glucose control in children and young people with Type 1 Diabetes and Coeliac Disease?

If the gut becomes damaged it may not be able to process the foods that we eat as well as it used to. This may also affect how we look after diabetes.

It is more likely for people who have Type 1 diabetes to also have a condition called Coeliac Disease. This is a disease that can damage the insides of the stomach and gut when we eat certain foods that have “gluten” in them. If the gut becomes damaged it may not be able to process the foods that we eat as well as it used to, and we think that this may also affect how we look after diabetes. It is important that we look after both of these conditions so that you stay healthy, and we want to know the best way to do this!

The study is going to use some special tests to see if eating a special diet helps your gut start to get better and how these changes may change your blood glucose levels and how much insulin you take.
