Last week, The Kids Research Institute Australia celebrated a remarkable milestone – 35 years of bold ideas, groundbreaking research, and the people who find answers to the big questions about better health outcomes for children and families.
The week-long celebrations honoured the pioneering spirit that has driven the Institute since its inception, while also looking ahead to the discoveries yet to come.
The festivities began with an all-staff forum that brought together four of the Institute’s founders – inaugural Chair Professor Lou Landau AO, inaugural Director Professor Fiona Stanley AC, Professor Wayne Thomas, and Professor Steve Zubrick. Together, they reflected on the early years of The Kids and how far the organisation has come since its founding in 1990.
Staff also recreated a memorable moment from 1990, gathering for a group photo to mirror one taken more than three decades ago.
On Wednesday, the spotlight turned to Government House Ballroom, where more than 250 guests – including Government Ministers, political leaders, industry partners, donors, supporters, and community champions – joined in a celebration of healthier, happier kids.
The event showcased just some of the life-changing breakthroughs made by researchers at The Kids over the past 35 years and recognised the invaluable partnerships that continue to drive progress.
To round out the week, the Institute proudly launched its ‘Behind the Breakthrough’ exhibition at Central Park Tower, Perth.
The interactive showcase offers the public a chance to step inside the stories behind some of The Kids’ most significant children’s health advances – from autism and childhood cancer to RSV, rare diseases, and Indigenous child health.
