World Autism Day: Championing inclusion through research, resources, and support

Today, on World Autism Day, we embrace the theme Celebrating Differences, recognising the unique strengths, perspectives, and contributions of autistic individuals.

Today, on World Autism Day, we embrace the theme Celebrating Differences, recognising the unique strengths, perspectives, and contributions of autistic individuals.

This day is a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion, understanding, and ensuring that every autistic child has the support they need to thrive.

At The Kids Research Institute Australia, we are committed to empowering autistic children and their families through world-leading research and transformative programs. In recognition of this important day, we are shining a light on some of the projects our researchers are leading to support children’s development, foster their strengths, and provide valuable resources for parents, caregivers and educators.

Trialling new ways to promote positive mental health in young children

With support from the AOJ Woods Foundation, CliniKids is leading an Australian-first evaluation of a parent program designed to enhance emotion regulation skills in young children diagnosed with autism.

This feasibility trial will assess whether the evidence-based program is suitable for delivery to families at our clinic and will support the development of positive emotion skills in children who may struggle with understanding and managing their emotions.

Building capacity within families

With support from the Rotary Club of Scarborough, CliniKids has created a series of free, family-friendly information sessions covering topics like play, mealtimes, gestures, anxiety, and relationships.

These sessions are designed to give parents practical tips, support, and tools to help their children thrive.

Equipping teachers with tools to better support diverse learners

With support from the AOJ Woods Foundation, CliniKids is developing online resources to help Australian teachers better support diverse learners.

Research suggests that most classrooms include at least five students with additional learning needs.

These flexible, self-paced resources will provide teachers across Australia with practical, neurodiversity-affirming knowledge and best-practice support strategies — no matter where they live or work.

By fostering understanding, providing valuable resources, and driving innovative research, we can create a world where every autistic child is supported to reach their full potential.

On World Autism Day and every day, we celebrate the strengths and contributions of autistic individuals and remain committed to building a more inclusive future – one where differences are not just acknowledged but embraced.
