Julian Heng is an Adjunct Associate Professor with over 20 years’ program management experience as a former research-intensive academic with external grant funding success. In May 2024, he was appointed Program Manager for the Global Disease Modelling team.  Julian's role is to support strategic projects and manage the day-to-day operations of the team that is focused on developing and applying mathematical and statistical models and other analytical approaches to address a broad range of questions around infectious diseases, interventions, and child health.

Julian has experience in applying for and managing externally funded, multi-year research projects, and has extensive experience in strategic planning and execution of multi-stakeholder projects. Previously, as a research academic (2004-2022), Julian collaborated with over 150 researchers all over the world to publish discoveries on the genetic causes of childhood brain disorders, and to leverage those findings to improve the clinical diagnosis of such conditions worldwide. In that time, Julian also gained experience in setting up, relocating and operationalizing a research team successfully across four universities (from 2008-2018) and managing a team of up to 14 personnel.

Julian holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Melbourne (Australia) (2002), a Bachelor’s of Science with First Class Honours from the University of Western Australia (1996), as well as a Diploma of Counselling from the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors (Australia), attained in 2022.

Outside of work, Julian enjoys busking with his family band, swimming and urban sketching.
