Language development studies recruiting

Language in Little Ones (LiLO) is a research study conducted by the Fraser Mustard Centre, investigating language interaction with infants and toddlers.

Study: Language in Little Ones (LiLO)

About the study

Language in Little Ones (LiLO) is a research study conducted by the Fraser Mustard Centre, investigating language interaction with infants and toddlers living in English-speaking households.

Our research will provide a significant contribution to understanding how the quality and quantity of parent and child talk in the early years impacts on children’s later developmental outcomes.

Who can be involved?

  • Children beginning their first year of schooling in 2021
  • Single birth (i.e. no twins)
  • English is the primary language spoken at home
  • Born at full term gestation (37+ weeks)
  • Lives in either Bunbury, Adelaide or the Gold Coast

What does participation involve?

Our research uses a product called Language Environment Analysis (LENA), a small digital language recorder. LENA records the audio in the environment around the child and through specially designed software counts the number of words or vocalisations spoken by the child and parents.

Once every 6 months until your child turns 4.5years, a research assistant will visit you at a time that is convenient to you, between Monday-Friday 8am-6pm, to provide you with the LENA recording device, specialised clothing, instructions for using the device, questionnaires, and to answer any questions that you may have. You will then pick a day within the next week to be your ‘recording day’. The research assistant will also organise a day after your recording day has been completed to then be able to collect the items and questionnaires.

Who do I contact to be involved?
